Brian Protheroe returns with a brand new album - ‘Still Walking’ -  set for release on 17 July, he continues to demonstrate how prolific he has recently been having released an album in 2025, ‘Coming Up Midnight, ‘The Last Serenade’ EP in 2024 and ‘A Salisbury Boy’ in 2023.

To be made available on all streaming platforms, the single ‘Mad Dog’ is available to hear now - here.

‘Still Walking’ is quintessentially Brian Protheroe. Full of the charm, chipper hooks and whimsey that floats the listener along through the album with the occasional break in proceedings for a more pointed, even aggressive sound, aimed at a certain political power - working out who is not too much of a challenge!

Brian’s relentless creative drive is the heartbeat of this new album. While widely recognised for his acting, songwriting has been a lifelong constant for Protheroe, yielding cult favorites like ‘Pinball’. That particular track has earned significant acclaim from musical heavyweights; Noel Gallagher was so moved by it while working on the High Flying Birds' album 'Chasing Yesterday' that he overhauled the opening song, ‘Riverman", after playing the track to his producer and drummer. Gallagher originally discovered the song via Morrissey, and more recently, Paul Weller included a cover of it on his latest release, 'Find El Dorado'. You can listen to Weller talk about the track here.

As for what inspired the album, Brian shares, "The inevitable reality of aging provides much inspiration! As you can tell from my last two albums, ‘The Last Serenade’ and ‘Comin Up Midnight’. On this new one, ‘Still Walking’, ‘Belong’, and ‘I Am The Night’ really fit that theme.

"A couple of tracks came from my growing concern about the madness of war. I’d actually started writing something about Trump during his first term but put it aside; recent events pushed me to write ‘Mad Dog’. ‘Soldier Soldier’, on the other hand, takes a much gentler approach."

"I also wanted to revisit three songs I was writing back in the 70s. ‘My Lady’s Lament’ was a BBC recording from ’76 with lyrics by Martin Duncan. I also revisited ‘Moon Over Malibu’—which also features Martin’s lyrics—from the ‘Pinball’ album. I’d always wanted to remix it to polish up the vocals and arrangement using the original 16-track tapes. Plus, there’s ‘Sail’, a song from those same Pinball sessions that never saw the light of day. I had a scratchy old demo I’d put on my Desert Road album, but this version uses the original audio.

"‘Dorothy and William’ is a little tribute to Flanders and Swan (definitely worth looking them up!), and ‘Music Makes Me’ is all about my musical roots and my love for Bossa Nova. And, of course, my love for different styles comes, inevitably, from the magnificent Beatles!"
