CD8 is a collection of bonus tracks from the Warner Vaults that includes instrumental backing tracks and work in progress versions of familiar songs.
Alongside this comprehensive collection of music, is a plethora of rare memorabilia and photographs including news articles, adverts, letters, posters and hand bills supplied by band member John Steel and Animals enthusiasts Kim Chester and Ashley Wood with extensive liner notes by Animals biographer Sean Egan.
The first incarnations of what would become The Animals was in 1962 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and from that point their rise to global fame was rapid and their flame burned brightly! With Eric Burdon and Chas Chandler joining Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo that year, John Steel and Hilton Valentine would join around August 1963. They changed their name to The Animals in December 1963.
In the summer of 1964 they released ‘House Of The Rising Sun’, a cover of a traditional folk song. It proved to be an instant hit reaching number one in the UK and US. They were a huge part of the British Invasion alongside the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Naturally the demand on the band increased immeasurably, with touring and promotional opportunities such as performing on The Ed Sullivan Show. By the spring of 1965 this expectation started to take its toll and Alan Price left the band.
As 1965 ended, the group signed a new deal with their American label MGM Records for the US and Canada, and switched to Decca Records for the rest of the world. Around this time the band's drummer John Steel also left the band and by September 1966, the original incarnation of the group had split up. Their last batch of recordings was released as ‘Animalism’ in November’ 1966.
